These gorgeous mini 15ml flacons arrived last Frid

These gorgeous mini 15ml flacons arrived last Friday. I've been eyeing them up with their fabulous glass stoppers all weekend. Full of promise to be filled with a new line and change of direction. Extrait anyone?

If you haven't applied perfume from stoppered flacons, they are a real throw-back to the early 20th century and before. Timeless in shape, they require slow, and thoughtful use of perfume. Not for the quick atomiser spritz. But in days when we all have nowhere to rush, perhaps they are of the moment once again.

Easing myself back into a working week on the cusp of the month. A very large espresso strength coffee and my favourite coffee table magazine, Cote Sud, to inspire me. The garden isn't looking too bad all things considered. The heat is as ferocious as ever as we reach the end of August, but some rain - perhaps a first massive storm - is forecast mid week. We could all do with a fresh start, the garden and me..

News tomorrow of an end summer sale but first, the website to sort out to accommodate it. The garden is already too hot for comfort so it's aircon all the way til dusk now. Wishing you a safe, productive week as we edge slowly into autumn. Perhaps a 'grande rientro' [big return] after a holiday for some who managed a getaway dodging the lockdowns and quarantine? My garden has been my mini break all summer. But it's thanked me for being here to tend it in the drought.

One of the most beautifully written and exquisite novels and inspiring my Sicily Quartet edp. It also describes perfectly the blistering heat, sounds and sense of longing for coolness and change that is this time of year in the southern Mediterranean. . .

As I write I can hear the late summer screech of the cicadas. I hibernate away inside today, fans whirring. The week of the 15th August is peak vacation time, even in this year of restrictions. A hop to Gozo perhaps, Sicily if you made it there in time - or as in my case, down the road to the local beach. .

Also known as Ferragosto, the 15th itself is the Feast of the Santa Maria, and the most feted saint's day of the year. It is known to herald a change in weather and often marked by the first clouds, tantilising us with the thought of rain.

And so the days roll on in a heat haze to the backdrop of cicadas. Only today is a bit different. It's my son's 18th birthday, and life is a changing for him! This view will always be here for him to return to wherever he heads next...which will be away from this island he calls home.

We talked about the history of leather and perfume, which are so intertwined and whose origins together involve the noxious and the notorious.

Birgu Blue is my stockist in Malta and given the historic partnering of leather and perfume, I can't think of a more appropriate outlet - and a meeting of minds with two very interesting men. Vlog out as soon as edited, so I'll let you know when.

My lone, lonely agapanthus. Am I the only one to never have more than a single bloom each year? My father in the UK has an amazing display of both blue and white agapanthus. The lonesome bloom becomes even more special though. There are those among us in the perfume community who have large collections of scent. But I hazard a guess that only a few flacons are ever used. The others will be admired, tended and treasured though. The single perfume among the mass will rise to the fore, swapped of course according to season, occasion and taste. Less is more?
